In order to communicate with others we use our facial muscles to express emotions. In this series I have used this concept to depict twelve different emotions.
Emotions are not permanent or solid - Through my use of paint and technique I have tried to create this non solid, non permanent feeling. A feeling of energy moving through as the emotion is manifesting.
The paint is applied differently for each emotion to depict the character of that particular emotion.
Scale - I've done these paintings on a large scale because I did not want them to look like conventional portraits but more like segments of wall art or billboards. This mirrors how our faces are an advertisment of our emotion.
Two sidedness - I wanted to express emotions in their duality and therefore decided to put contradicting emotions on the front and back of each panel. The idea behind this is that one can only experience one of the two extreme emotions at once. In the same vein the viewer can only gaze upon one of the two opposite emotions at a time.
I thrive on the conversation that develops between myself and the artwork during the creative process.
