With this series I explored the concept of beauty in handmade objects that are not normally considered 'art'. By presenting them on canvas and putting them forward as part of 'painting' I hope to give them elevated status. They honor the work done by our mothers and grandmothers.
The doily is also something I associate with immigrating, a little piece of culture from a faraway land. As a result, cross-pollination took place and the doily took on new flavours of its new environment. I try to portray this by having three different aesthetics; the Victorians, the Africans and the Polynesians.
